We finished the beds today and made serious headway on the fence! Thanks to a local alpaca farmer, we received a surprise delivery of free alpaca manure to mix into the beds.
The 10 beds were constructed using the “lasagna” method of raised bed building. A first layer of cardboard was laid down straight onto the grass follow by a layer of shredded paper. On top of the paper, pre-consumer food scraps from Oberlin College dining halls were added. Next, a healthy layer of leaf mulch covered the food waste followed by 3-4 inches of top soil. The alpaca manure was hand-tilled into the soil mixture on top of the beds.
O yeah, and the ice cream man came; what a perfect day.
